Acne is commonly thought of as a “teenager’s problem” because it usually shows up at the onset of puberty. The truth is, though, that acne can affect adults just as easily as it affects teenagers. This is because while a lot of acne is caused by overproduction of certain hormones, it can also be caused by bacteria, diet issues and other environmental factors.

The acne you have as an adult is the exact same acne you had as a teenager, though adolescent acne is usually called Acne Vulgaris and adult acne is called Acne Rosacea. Some scientists think that adult acne can also be caused by genetics, though there is still quite a bit of research that needs to be done in that department before any definitive answers can be found.

Adult acne usually comes in one of two types. There is “open” acne (or blackheads) and there is “closed” acne (or whiteheads). Both types of adult acne form pimples. Pimples themselves are made up of fat deposits and debris that combine in hair follicles. As the combination grows, it bursts the hair follicle and causes irritation to the skin. That irritation is the pimple.

Adult acne is fought and treated the same way as acne is fought and treated during adolescence. It can be treated with over the counter, chemical based treatments or it can be treated with natural herbs and items found at home. The same is true for acne preventionit can be done with store bought products or items already in your kitchen or bathroom.

Most adult acne can be cleared up within eight weeks. If eight weeks have gone by and your acne is still as bad as it was two months ago, you should seek the help of a dermatologist. Your skin might be sensitive and a dermatologist will have access to treatments you can’t get without a doctor’s help.
